Piqué knit is a type of knitwear with a slightly raised texture and a geometric pattern reminiscent of small diamonds or squares. This material is particularly associated with the world of polo and sportswear, thanks in particular to its use by the Lacoste brand in the 1930s. Here's an overview of its history:

The origins of quilted mesh

  • Invention in the 1920s-1930s: Quilted knitwear was popularized by René Lacoste, the famous French tennis player, who was looking for a fabric that was both comfortable and breathable for his sportswear. At the time, tennis players wore stiff, impractical shirts. René Lacoste wanted a garment that was more suitable for sports use, and collaborated with textile industrialist André Gillier to create a lighter, more breathable fabric.
  • Introduction of the Lacoste polo shirt (1933): The pique-knit polo became a revolution in the world of sports. Thanks to its unique texture and airy structure, quilted knit provided better heat and moisture regulation, while offering freedom of movement. This fabric quickly became the preferred choice for polo shirts, combining elegance and functionality.

Technical data

  • Structure: Quilted mesh is woven to create a raised pattern, usually in the form of small diamonds or squares. This special weave gives the fabric a robust yet breathable texture.
  • Breathability: One of the main advantages of quilted knitwear is that it is designed to let air through, making it ideal for summer wear or sports activities.
  • Durability: The dense texture of quilted knitwear makes it highly resistant to wear, while retaining a light, comfortable feel.
